Isn't it all relative to age? I would say that someone earning £40k at the age of 40 is a mid earner. But someone earning £40k at 21 is a high earner What about earning as many k as you are old?

    low earner: <your age -10k
med earner: your age +(-9k to +10k)
    high earner: >your age +11k

Lol by that and with my age it would be 28k for a low earner, 29k-48k for a mid and 49k for a high earner.

Right now I would love half of the low earner income.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Not quite... up to 28k for the low earner; and from 49k for the high earner. Ie, those figures are respectively the top and bottom ends. I know it's semantics, but I came up with those figures pretty quickly, just to illustrate the concept. They also refer to people in full-time employment, I should have said.

And are you saying that aged 38, you're earning less than £14k?? If that's the case, according to my little theory, you're a low earner - isn't that what you would argue?
  • Low - less than me.

Medium - a bit more than me.

High - a lot more than me.

Maybe a low earner is one who needs benefits to pay their way in the world. A medium earner is one who just earns enough to avoid benefits and a high earner pays 40% tax. There's also the hideous earners who take (I cannot say earn) £millions.

low: less than about 16k (20k for a family).

    high: over 50k.

(again as an individual- i wouldnt class joint earnings of 50k as a 'high earning family' probably over 70k.)

Did anyone else watch 'What Britain Earns' by Peter and Dan Snow at the beginning of the year? Apparently only 10% of the UK population earns over £46k per year. I couldn't find the programme on the net as a download, but there's an ok article about it here:

What always disappoints me is that public sector workers insist on fairly equal wages around the country - resulting in huge differences in spending power across the country - it would be best if wages were negotiated locally so that they were set at an appropriate level across the country - for example currently teachers are well off in some parts (Wales for example rarely has teacher vacancies) and not in others - London for example so the Welsh schools get the pick of good teachers whereas London schools must almost take who ever applies and thus standards in London are much lower :(

I think you'll find that the ability to speak Welsh is a requirement in many Welsh schools, thus limiting the choice of teachers. There are also cultural, social & logistical differences that would make Wales less attractive to many teachers, though they might make the area more attractive to others. (More young people leave Wales than enter the country as new residents each year.)

In any event, it is unlikely that someone contemplating a post in, say, Tower Hamlets, would also be considering another in Tregaron. Not impossible, just unlikely!

I earn my age + 12k! So, yay!

My wife earns her age - 12k. So, boo.

    I guess we're mid. :)

It also depends on how many people the wage has to support.

Single man on 80k equals good living.
Same man with SAW + 4 kids; just gets by in London / SE.

    From a london perspective I would say;

    150k+ HIGH

    70k MEDIUM.

    Under 30k LOW.

  • Interesting thread, my perception would be:

    Low - under £12,000
    Mid - over £30,000
    High - over £50,000

These are all for one person, regardless of age, working full-time.
A minute at the till, a lifetime on the bill.

Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels.
