gas/electric for 4 bed detatched

Recently moved into a 4 bed detatched from a 2 bed flat .

Had our first gas/electric bills in & just want to see if what we are paying is the norm ? i know it depends on what you are using & how many people etc .

There is just 2 of us ,heating is on an hour in the morning & 3 hours at night time ,have all the usual appliances but nothing unusual .

Looks like our bill per annum will be around 1300.00 using approx 22248 kWh of gas & 3609 kWh of electric ,our current supplier is British Gas .

So for a 4 bed detatched looks like going to work out 105.00 a month ???

I've done some quick quotes online & really doesnt look like its worth changing supplier for the savings involved ,i could be wrong though .

Sound about right ??

Thanks in advance.
Gotta love a good bargain !

Yes, unfortunately Scottyboy that looks about right for a four bedroom house although I pay a bit less for it, the usage is similar.

get thermostatic radiator valves fitted, and in the rooms you hardly use turn them to minimum heat setting and keep the doors closed.
no point heating rooms you dont use.

thanks for your advise ,sadly though have been doing this since we moved in ,would be even more expensive otherwise ,dread the thought .The flat we were in was on the 3rd floor out of 5 ,most expensive bill for 3 mths was 150.00 so think we had been spoilt .

that sounds a lot of gas for 4 hours heating a day. We heat an extended 3 bed detached and have heating on about 6 or 7 hours a day and only consume 12000kwh per annum. If you use a shower on a combi it will probably add a bit more but still sounds high for only a few hours heating.
  • we have a four bedroom semi-detatched old sandstone house and our d/d is currently set at £139. Like you we were in a 3 bed flat and were paying about £40 gas and electricity a month. We have the central heating on about 7 hours a day just now on a fairly low setting as we are trying to build up credit in our account. I'm on maternity leave and will be in with a new baby after christmas so dreading what it could end up! I phoned yesterday and asked to be put on the best value package they had. I'm with scottish power and she changed me to online disconted energy no standing charge which would reduce d/d to £89 but I decided to leave it at £139 to hopefully combat massive bills.

    Hi

I moved in to a 4 bed house 1 year ago, and my consumption was similar to your 22,000 kwh and 3500kwh electric. I also think it is excessive costing £900 gas and £400 electric. Also similar to you I have gas on 1 hr morning and about 5 hrs night, and water heating gas about 45min per day.

I have posted number of questions on forum to find why is so high, my boiler is a 1991 baxi model which is old and I have done the usual thing of turning thermostats down in unused rooms. Should I get a latest boiler or what?

But the above usage is based on been out during the weekdays, god know what it would be if home all day everyday?

I am monitoring my gas usage on weekly basis on https://www.imeasure.org.uk and over last 4 weeks its cost £30.63, 27.93, 26.74, 21.70 - I think it is a lot of money. Daily £3- £4?

I'm happy with electri of £6 per week £400 a year.

If you got any further advice please share.

    thanks

Is there any harm in switching off radiators in rooms you don't use? E.g get damp or whatever? We have thermostats on our radiators which allow the radiators to be switched off completely.
  • Ive been told boilers should be replaced every 15 years for maximum efficiency, it might be something to think about satish 98

    Welcome to the forum.

Who told you that? A plumber?

Whilst new boilers are more efficient, the capital cost of replacing a boiler is very high and is most unlikely to be recovered over the life of a new boiler.

There have been lots of threads on this subject. This is a quote from one of the threads.

don't know if you have read this article about a report from Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...erts-warn.html

    About boilers they state:

"Installing a condensing boiler – frequently cited as one
of the best ways to improve the energy efficiency of a home – can take 18 years to make a pay back.
    The average cost
of installing one of these modern boilers is £1,720, but saves on average just £95 off people's gas bills."
  • We are in a large 4 bed detached house and pay £135 per month combined gas/electric with Scottish Power.
