I would love to know though, which is more economical? Heating water for washing and (at least I do this, don't know if everyone does) then running the hot tap over the dishes to rinse off the detergent or running the DW for a cycle (and probably doing twice as many dishes, I only have a tiny draining board and OH complains if there is too much "Kitchen Jenga" going on)?
If anyone knows I'd love to be enlightened!
I never rinse the dishes after I've washed them.
When the DW gets used (rarely), I never rinse the plates before I put them in. If I'm going to do that, I may as well just wash by hand
It's supposed to be more economical to use the DW but I don't believe it. lol
I have a hob kettle, as soon as I've made a cuppa I refill the kettle with cold water and leave it for a bit. The residual heat warms the water up then I use it to wash up. The water not the kettle :rotfl:Bulletproof0 -
arrrrggggghhhhh nooooooooo I'd much rather wash up than empty the dishwasher, it's a horrible job and I hate it
And I like to clean up as I go along so that everything's always clean and tidy and I like to always have plenty of clean saucepans and plates 'n stuff. It's maddening when you want to use a certain thing RIGHT NOW and it's in the dishwasher waiting to be washed
I am with you there, but I also love my dishwasher - I have a bit of a mix. Once I learned the Flylady trick of filling a sink with hot soapy water when starting cooking, I discovered how great it is to clean up kitchen utensils etc. as and when you use them and have things mostly clean and put away before you sit down to dinner. But after dinner I always collapse, I find I've done enough so the dinner plates and dishes and whatever else is kicking around at that time go straight into the dishwasher. I only need to run it every other day that way, so that diminishes the times I have to do the boring job of emptying it. Works fine.
Of course it would even be better to delegate to DH. He hates the DW with a vengeance, and it is true he does not mind washing up too much - the only question there is WHEN. Definitely not after dinner. With luck after next day's breakfast. But more likely some time later, and you can see how that just doesn't work. That's OK, though. He has his own jobs and routines, of which he acquits himself promptly and without fail. If I had a choice between George Clooney for the night or keeping my dishwasher, I know which would win...;)
Hmmm, George Clooney/dishwasher. Tough choice... Pass the rubber gloves:p0 -
I am a HUGE fan of the dishwasher.
A couple of years ago when we had the kicthen redone, i was more happy to have no washing machine than dishwasher - I could get away with taking a laundry basket of washing to my mums, but i think i would have had a few raised eyebrows if i had tried to take a pile of washing up for the dishwasher.:rotfl:0 -
I hate washing up too.
I usually fill the sink with steaming hot water and put in some Stardrops instead of normal washing up liquid. Stardrops will take the grease and muck off more things a lot quicker and easier than washing up liquid.
Leave for 10 mins or so and everything comes off in notime at all.0 -
Put some music on and take the opportunity to really enjoy listening to it for once while you wash up, as you won't be distradted by owt else. Or as a previosu poster mentioned, just spend it daydreaming...we all need to stop focusing so intently sometimes.
I had a dishwasher, I hated it. Had to unload it and dry it asap or it smelt funny, so added to the work, cos otherwise i would just leave it on the rack to dry. could never fit certain awkward things in, pretty noisy, took up space i could have had for better things.August grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -
I know it sounds daft but I put the radio on and set the timer on my mobile phone to 15 mins and see how much I can get washed in that time.
Then I will come onto the pc and have a mooch online for the next 15 mins then set it again for another 15 and carry on with some more washing up.0 -
i love my dishwasher, if i had a choice between my dishwasher breaking down or my washing machine the washing machine would win hands down. i can take my clothes to the launderette but i cant take my pots.
by the way, handwashed pots should always be rinsed. You look at a plate if you leave it to dry, there are always minute traces of washing up liquid on the surface, even drying them does not take it all off. You are ingesting this stuff into your system at every meal, every cuppa. Like i say, only minute traces but they add up over the years.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Ever since i moved here 12 years ago... i have loved washing up but hate drying up!! But now with my boys being 11, 8 and 3 we go through heaps of washing up each day! and for about the last 8 months i got so fed up of doing it.... and had a new dishwasher about 8 weeks ago..... ohhh i cant be without it now! What i do is load up with stuff from throughout the day.. and put it on before going to bed.... and once boys are off to school i come back and unload it ready for the day ahead.
Loving the dishwasher handy with xmas coming up :-)))))) x0
