Movies won't default to Windows Media Player

Options
It's been a while since I've re-installed and I've stripped out quite a lot of Windows (possibly something critical or necessary).

Anyway, whenever I try to open an .avi it does so in Notepad2. For some reason it won't open in WMP, despite it being the default (when checking file types).

If I do the Open With... dialog and tick "Always open with this application..." and select WMP, then it still doesn't save the setting.

I may just download VLC and apply a WMP skin to it, would just like to fix the above problem as it's bugging me.

Have you tried opening "My computer" selecting tools / folder options.. / file types. Scroll down the list to .avi. In the bottom half of the window does it say it opens with windows player? If not select change and from the list click on windows media player - if it's not on the list WMP is not installed properly. If .AVI is not on the list then use "add" and select WMP as the default player.

Thanks but already gone there which is why it's so baffling.
