Belfast City Airport

  • I live in East Belfast and am aware of the 6.45 flight noise, but it seems to be the taxi-ing noise and enging revving (if planes "rev" their engines?? LOL) rather than the actual taking off. It also depends on the direct the wind is blowing as some mornings it is a lot louder than others. Cant complain though as I have caught the early morning flight myself recently and it was very convenient!
Feel free to thank me, it makes my toes tingle and my ears go warm :T
  • PS Mojopolo - takes longer to get to International if you dont have access to a car and Im afraid I go with whever offers the cheapest flights to where I need to get to..not always International unfortunately.

mojopolo - first flight leaving after 7.30? my guess is you haven't seen the sydneham bypass or sandyknowes at 7.30? lots of people are up and away to work long before 7.30, plus you also have to think of scheduling later, a plane leaving here at 6.40 may well be heading somewhere else for 9am and then maybe somewhere on the continent for 11am, a 7.30/8am start would mean a massive reduction in options for travellers going out possibly with 9am meetings and people coming in...............

should be noted I'm actually under the take off path for all the flybe flights in the morning and easyjet ones coming in any time of the day and that I did use to live within the last half mile of approach to the City airport, they were there long before I was............................

  • Fair enough Seatzie and I always felt the same about the airport, especially since I do use it. But the ryanair thing really does seem to have made a difference both to frequencies of flights and to flight noise. I was at something outdoors in south belfast last night and you could hardly hear people, even with the microphone, when flights went overhead. Also at key times of day (esp 5-6 pm) there is a flight landing every 5-10 mins.

But agree re the International, last time I was coming back from it at 7.30am there were queues at sandyknowles! I can cope with current opening times for belfast city but really do think it would be a mistake to extend them!

Ryanair's planes are noisier than the BMI airbuses. Belfast City are selling their souls to the devil here. It is only Ryanair that need a runway extension to get their 737-800's airborne towards Europe. Both BMI and Flybe have aircraft easily capable of reaching Europe without a runway extension. Commercially they have chosen not to bother.
This is a mirror image of the debacle that O'leary started up in Derry. You can rest assured that if, after upteen million is spent building a runway extension, it no longers suits Ryanair then they will drop it like a hot brick. There is already rumour of them shipping out due to dire yields and loads. Not that long ago I would have credited the City Airport with better judgement than that. Desperate times I suppose.

Considering I live in Sydenham, can practically see peoples smiling faces from the windows of the plane....it doesn't bother me!! Yes if I'm outside it's noisy and they do scare my DD abit but inside with double glazing I don't notice it at all. I hear the 6.30 flight if I'm awake but it's never woken me, though it could probably explode overhead and it wouldn't waken me!!
It's one of those things, we chose to live here because it's so close to town, handy for everything and was a price we could afford, I would hate to leave the area and the plane noise would never make me want to.
I say bring on more cheap flights...can't wait for Ryanair's cheap flights abroad!!

Unfortunately with the Euro the way it now is, demand for cheap flights to Euroland will significantly reduce. The aviation industry is in carnage at present and all carriers are feeling the pain including O'Leary's.
Ironically the planning application for the runway extension appeared in last night's Telegraph.

  • I've lived under the flight path for 30 years and don't mind the noise at all. I'm just so grateful to have the city airport near me, so handy!

I agree, that cheaper/better transport links to International would be good though. However, cant be as bad as London - recently flew to London Standstead with Ryanair - the Stanstead express costs me over £50 for two return tickets! Rip off!!

Ryanair used to sell Stansted express tickets in flight at a reduced rate (think it was £20), last time I flew I asked to get them....apparently they no longer sell them....but only on the Belfast flights!!! Still available on other routes...think NI is getting discriminated against again!!

Just book them here. I have used this when flying to Stansted with Air Berlin in the good old days
