Cheap train travel between Liverpool/Manchester/Sheffield and Norwich

If you're travelling between Sheffield and Norwich or vice versa you can do so for a £1 single off-peak fare now available from http://www.megatrain.com/uk/(who are associated with Stagecoach, who run East Midlands Trains.)

The Sheffield to Norwich service calls at Liverpool Lime St, Liverpool South Parkway, Widnes, Warrington Central, Manchester (Oxford Rd and Piccadilly) and Stockport prior to arriving at Sheffield. Cheap fares aren't advertised between Liverpool and Sheffield, possibly due to the service being very busy on that section. However, if you are travelling from Liverpool to Norwich, for example, you can buy a Liverpool to Sheffield ticket and a £1 Sheffield to Norwich ticket for much cheaper than a Liverpool to Norwich ticket, plus you don't have to change trains and consequently not worry about missing a connection.

  • Great advice; see the 'split ticketing' board for more such options.

Liverpool-Sheffield may not count as Megatrain but there are cheap advance tickets available for the route - try the normal train booking websites and travel off-peak. From £4.60 e/w.

    Understatement of the year :D

You can't actually get on the train in peak hours in Liverpool unless you are there as it arrives from its previous journey.

Apparently the reason they don't have enough carriages to run it properly is because the previous operator lied about passenger numbers to the regulators so they didn't have to hand as many train sets over to the new people. Talk about being a joke.

Partly true and partly passing the buck.

Thanks ever so much for this tip. Didn't manage to get the £1 fares but still got tickets to Sheffield for £8 each way and then could buy a cheap saver return to Manchester but for the same train. Managed to save well over £100 pounds doing it this way. :T
