Gas oven cuts out after 20 mins

Hi all

Has anyone any idea why my gas oven should cut out after 20 mins of use?

Belling came to repair it a few days ago & put a new thermocouple in it but said the oven control knob was also worn inside & to order a new one & that it might still cut out until we had a new knob.

The knob arrived on Saturday & I started to cook with it & lo & behold it cut out again after 20 mins!! Could it be the mechanism of the bit the knob goes onto sticking or something?

Belling are coming back but not until next week

Any ideas appreciated!

Are you paying for the repairs or are they covered by some form of warranty?.
If paying then it may be cost effective to scrap and buy new (you may have already spent money on it).
If warranty then they will get it working correctly and if not may even replace with new.

When engineer back ensure you try the oven with something to heat for at least 30 min's with the engineer in attendance (you may have to lock him in the kitchen as he won't want to stay)

This is something i would suggest requires an expert to sort out and not a DIY job.
  • I paid for the original visit where they repaired the thermocouple but they said I won't pay for this visit because it's still the same fault.

I'm just worried about my Turkey not being cooked on Xmas Day!

Its a wait and see situation hopefully it will be fixed next week but i would speak to friends, relatives in case you may have to use their cooker if the worst happens.

These faults are the most difficult to locate, other's who read your post may be better placed to offer further advise.

I would suggest that its either the new thermocouple, also known as a flame failure device (ffd) is faulty, or the oven burner is slightly blocked.

When your oven is lit, the thermostat increases the gas to the burner, once the oven has reached the set temperature the thermostat starts to reduce the gas flow to the burner.

Because at this point the gas pressure is reduced to the burner, the flame in any partially blocked ‘holes’ in the burner would go out. The ffd would sense there was no flame (even if the rest of the burner was working ok) and cut the gas supply off.

Most engineers would carry cans of compressed air, which usually do the trick, if not then they would remove the burner and wash it through.

Please don’t try and fix it your self by sticking a pin down the burner holes.

If all else fails, you can get some microwave turkey meals from Asda;)
  • thanks for replies! lets hope that's all it is!

An oven going out when up to temp is far more likely to be a blocked bypass.

The OP is doing exactly the right thing by calling in the manufacturers, keep on at them til you get a result:rudolf:

They changed the thermocouple first because its easier!
Mine needed a new fan so that must be whats wrong with yours:D

We had a Cannon. It was similar.
It used to blow out whenever the oven got up to temperature and the thermostat switched the gas to the burner from high to low. Cannon fitted new valves, thermostat, sensors, increased the gas pressure from the meter, until it only went out if you opened or closed the door too quickly.
The Stoves replacement we bought in the end works perfectly. (We could only stand so many uncooked dinners)
  • Thanks
Hope they manage to unblock iit if that's what it is & I don't have to keep getting them back!
