£500 for a rear bumper!

Hi all,
I bumped into somebody's else car earlier this year, and it destroyed their rear bumper. When my insurance company called me to inquire about it, I was told that at renewal time, I could pay for the repair so I would not lose my no claim bonus. It's now renewal time, and they're saying they paid £500!! So either I pay £500, or they increase my premium by more almost £500.
Is that right? How can a bumper be that expensive?! Is there anything I can do?
Thanks in advance,
Alex

It will be right - your insurers wouldn't lie to you. You can ask them to send you a copy of the invoice.
On some cars it's a lot more!
If you aren't going to have any more claims for 3 years, then pay it yourself, as apart from the near £500 increase you now face, your premiums will be higher for at least the next two years whilst you get back the NCD to its current level.
Also, if you don't currently have max NCD, then you will take 2 years longer to get there.0 -

You don't have to renew with them, get quotes from different insurance companies.

Personally I think it is pretty cheap.
New original equipment manufacturer bumpers are £250 plus, painting, fitting, assesement time/cost before, (these insurance approved places charge to take a look at the vehicle to quote) car hire for a couple of days as the owner of the hit vehicle doesn't want to be disadvantaged.
Lucky no whiplash claim was put in as well.I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

I have 2 scrapes on my bumper (no cracking) and that was v cheap at just over £2000

I agree £500 is quite cheap for parts and labour
could have been worse if they had acoustic parking sensors fitted as well0 -
When you think about:
Parts,
Paint + Materials,
Labour,
Sundries,
+ VAT.
500 is very reasonable.
When a claim comes to me with repairs about £500, 99% of the time wont even question it, compared to what some Accident management firms charge, its real cheap.0 -
Yep, someone drove into my rear bumper a while back and it was over £500 to have fixed. And my car's only a lowly Skoda Fabia! I was amazed.0
