  • Chorlton1000, I am apalled to hear this story and trust you were not too shaken by these events. My friend was car-jacked in 2006 for a Golf GTI and it was later used as a get-away car in an armed robbery, this may happen with your vehicle in which case it could be recovered shortly.

    In answer to your questions.

    1. Insurers will usually allow 1 month/6 weeks to elaspse before settlement of your claim, to see if the car turns up
    2. You can refuse the new car replacement but are very unlikely to receive anywhere near the cash equivalent, bearing in mind that insurers (particularly in this climate) will receive large discounts on new car orders. You will be offered the market value of a used 3 month old Type R.
    3. Whilst I have not heard of a similar theft it does not strike me as unfeasable and would be viewed in a similar way to car jacking. Because of the vehicle value you may be interviewed in person by yr insurers.

    Hope this helps.

"im sure if you explain your concerns to your insurers they might come to some arrangement for you."

Really? You really think that the insurer will care about their customer's fears? I had to have a TV replaced but told my insurer that I wanted something less conspicuous from outside and would they send me a cash alternative so I could get something smaller. They refused and said all I could have was another TV exactly like the last one. That was just for a TV ...
I've been making animations for my daughter. Tell me what you think? Search for "Where are you Pickles?" and "Pickles and the Bully" on YouTube.

  • Whilst they won't necessarily be interested in Chorton's safety concerns there may be benefit in the insurer not replacing the vehicle due to the high (underwriting) risk of putting this policyholder in a new vehicle. Ultimately there is likely to be a clause stating the insurer can settle in the manner they best see fit providing the policyholder is no worse a position after the claim.

Most insurance companies will provide a replacement car if it is written off in the first year of ownership.

A colleague's wife's car was written off after 11 months. It was a Fiesta diesel, she replaced it with a petrol, so swap doesn't have to be like for like.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. This must have been dreadful.

Get another R-type but fit a tracker and if it did get stolen, you'd almost certainly get it back.

but if a robber had thrashed the living b*llocks off your car, would you actually WANT it back.

    i wouldnt
