Insurance LOOK CAREFULLY at small details

Looking for home insurance I visited some sites that select a number of quotes for you, most of what I looked at contained the very minimal cover and a £150 excess(YOU HAVE TO LOOK VERY CAREFULLY) for what looked like a cheap price.I searched individual insurers and the best I could find was AA.Home and contents, accidental damage, legal fees,£50 excess and much more for £163.It's just not worth skimping and finding there is a HIDDEN clause that you didn't see on the site and ending up paying dearly for it.

What 'hidden clause' are you referring to?
The excess is hardly 'hidden', far from it.
As for full AD cover - you may want it but others may not.
Really not sure what your point is.0 -

Excesses are not hidden.
When you get the policy documents:
1. the excess amount is either in the key facts, or
2. the excess amount is mentioned in the key facts, or
3. is in normal size print in the first few pages of the document, or
4. in all 3 of the places I've mentioned
The reason being is that if they are not then you would have a reason to complain to the financial ombudsman service as a consumer if you needed to make a claim and report the company to the FSA for an unfair contract.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I don't think the original poster was specifically stating that excesses were often hidden ... I think it was just a grammatical mis-placing of the caps statements?
Hidden surprises are things like cancellation charges (e.g. http://www.noclaimsdiscount.co.uk/news/art_display.php?show=200812061) and exclusions from cover ... such as those thousands of people who got stranded when the airlines went bust even though they had travel insurance -- and I recently found out that my oil-run boiler was not covered by my home emergency insurance! They buried that one well too ...I've been making animations for my daughter. Tell me what you think? Search for "Where are you Pickles?" and "Pickles and the Bully" on YouTube.

If its in the policy document - you're covered. If it isn't (or excluded), then you're not.
It is YOUR responsibility to read the policy documentation to ensure the cover meets your needs. That is why the advisor will say something like "When you receive your documentation please read it carefully to ensure the cover meets your needs".0 -
Hi there
Dilema239, can I firstly apologise for the fact that my colleagues on this site failed to say "thank you" for your post. They seem to jump on any fact that they can argue and forget that someone who has only made a few posts is ONLY TRYING TO HELP.
As for the rest of you, shame on you. OP (Original Poser - Dilema239) was only trying to put forward a point of view; something that is shared by the FSA, or have you not read the following on the FSA Website:
http://www.fsa.gov.uk/pages/Doing/Regulated/Promo/thematic/gi_comparison.shtml
Please see the section on "Excess Levels".
Now before you decide to kick off at someone, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!
Here endeth the lesson. In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0 -

not sure if I was being ironic or sarcastic - either way, I agree with youHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
thw whole 'Treating Customers Fairly' thing is coming into place as we speak (in fact it should probably have a thread of its own) but the fundamental problem will ALWAYS remain that
- over the phone many customers simply do not listen
- do not read documents when they arrive
- do not read important information when buying online
- deliberatly enter false information0 -

I havent read anything on the FSA site because it is really really boring, although I know when you are in the market for "cheap" (see original post) you get what you pay for...and what's with the CAPITAL LETTERS?Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
