In the meantime the OP is probably no wiser, because although the posts so far are technically correct theyre not very helpful to someone who may not be technically minded.´If someone has to ask how to set up the security they probably have never heard of WPA-PSK, WPA2 or WEP.

Essentially you set an encryption key on your router (you access your router settings by normally typing 192.168.1.1 into your browser). You will have to enter a user name and password. If you haven´t accessed it before the default username is normally "admin" or your router brand such as "linksys". Same for the password. The security will be under one of the menu headings. You will be able to select the type of encryption e,g wpa, and also enter an access key (i.e password). Save this, making sure you have a note of the access key.

You then need to set this key in the network access settings on your pc/laptop. No one else will be able to access your network without this key.

This is just a summary of what you will need to do, as it will depend upon the router you have and the type of OS., although it´s not as difficult as it sounds. The best thing is to consult the manual which which came with your router, as it will set out what type of encryption you can use, and how to go about it. If you don´t have it you can normally download it from the manufacturers website, or failing that there wil be some help in the forum they probably run, assuming it´s a standard make.

    Hope this helps

Turn it off an use a wired connection. 100% safe.
No matter what you do with a wireless connection it's always going to have some insecurity in it.
It's your level of acceptible risk which determines how much security you can live with.

Please get someone to help you and don't leave it unsecured. Why? If someone wirelessly connects to you router you will not know, if they then surf to something illegal or abhorent that the Police may be interested in (they often setup entrapment websites for paedophiles etc) then they will trace it back to YOU as the address your router sits on the web. There will be no evidence anyone did it wirelessly so they will probably arrest you and take you PC away to be disected.

This has to be the most effective way for a disgruntled neighbor to stitch someone up ever!
  • Why is there so much unpleasant rude behaviour on these boards?

A novice pc user comes on asking for help and all they get is people bickering amongst themselves and meanwhile the OP is none the wiser and often scared away.

Thanks to the last poster who advised the importnace of securing your wireless connection. Also it is true that a wired connection is safer, that said: Bomber 2 don't leave it, if needs be get someone in to help you do it, do not leave it and do not be scared away from posting either.

The OP left as soon as they posted, like many do. Some never return to read the responses.

To help we need more info, which router they use for a start. The oneupmanship is tedious, but less likely to start if people hang around until the issue is resolved.
my router is a netgear, and my insp is aol.
