It sounds like adware/spyware has got onto your friend's PC. From that error message, it may be something called SpyAxe.
There are several anti-adware tools you can install and run: Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal; the excellent SpyBot Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html; or Microsoft's AntiSpyware Beta http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en
If it is SpyAxe, there are removal instructions from McAfee here: http://tools.mcafeehelp.com/doc.php?siteid=1&docid=395886&support=ts0 -
you could try this http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm

check the files which open up when your computer turns on and look for anything suspicious (start>run>msconfig(services/startup))... google the suspicious files and see if its a virus/spyware or not. if it is a virus/spyware, untick the box next to it.0
