  • Hi!

Not sure where exactly you are able to get military discounts, but OH has just arrived back from his 2nd 'short-tour' in the USA (sorry not sure of correct term- not military myself- just married to it!).
Anyhow, he got offered discount in every shop where he showed his I.D.
He had his bill paid in some resturants and was bought drinks by total strangers by way of a thank you for helping the Americans! when in uniform (though obv. you wont be!) he was approached by countless members of the public ;again thanking him for 'helping out'- the American public are highly supportive of the British troups out there.
So i guess you just need to do a lot of flashing and the discounts will follow!!

Yeah i agree with the above. I showed my ID card for the Empire state building and went straight to the front of the queue and it was a big queue. I showed my id card at Sea World in San Diego and myself and my wife got in for for free and saved $120, so if there is one in NY im sure they will do the same.

  • Hi

I went to New YorK in 2006 for the New year with the wife as a celebration post my last Iraq tour and had a wonderful time (top tip take your id card to get any discounts) Discounts i achieved i will list below

    1) Flew American Airlines told them i just got back from iraq and Wife and I got a free upgrade to business class both ways

    2) Got half price tickets to see phantom of the opera on Broadway direct from the theatre office on 42nd Street on New years Eve i.e. $100 dollar tickets cost us $50 dollars

    3) Free entry to empire state building

    4) Managed to get right at the front on Times square at the new year celebration after telling a copper that I had come back from Iraq (after he saw my id card he said no problem and let us through the security barriers otherwise we would have had to watch teh celebration from a mile away)

    5) Other place to get discounts are the USO ( united services organisation) which is located in the Port authority bus terminal cant remember the street no ( i suggest google it)

    6) I am sure that there are plenty of other places to get discounts. I found that my phantom of the opera tickets i got a better discount direct from the box office then the USO

Hope this helps have a good time I know i did
  • Totally agree with the previous posters. They have a far greater respect for service personnel in America. As far as military discounts go, just ask. Its that simple. When you get to the till ask if they give military discount, a hell of a lot do compared to anywhere on the high street here. Above all, enjoy your trip you lucky thing!!!
  • i was in belize a few years back and they were advertising a hotel that is owned in the middle of new york by the military think it is something like the union jack club in the uk but it does discounted rates for member of the forces and i would imagine that some of the police out there would know where it is as it said on the poster "that it was in the middle of the city just minutes from most of the main attractions"

  • Cheapest place to stay by far in New York, referred to above, is the:

Soldiers', Sailors', Marines', Coast Guard and Airmen's Club (aka SSMA Club)
located at 283 Lexington Ave. (at 37th St.) See http://ssmaclub.org/

Prices per person, per night are dependant on your rank and start at $25 for junior ranks, up to $60 for senior officers. There is also a VIP room for $120 per couple. Bookings are taken up to 3 months ahead.

Phoned them today, and they are quite happy to welcome UK servicemen/women and their families.

Alternately, the cheapest 'posh' way to stay is via a reciprocal membership with the Union Jack Club, In & Out Club or RAF Club etc...if you happen to be a member.
    See http://www.rafclub.org.uk/reciprocal_list.raf

    Happy hunting!
  • Whilst i don't have any discounts, its awesome that American business actually give military discounts even to UK servicemen/women. Thats what we need over here, to be more patrotic and show more respect to members of the military!!!!!
