Upgrading CDwriter to DVDwriter

Before physically changing a CD drive for a DVD drive, do I need to do anything in the PC software (like disable/uninstall the old CD driver software) ??

Thanks,

[PC is a 4yr old Fujitsu 2GHz desktop, P4, with Win2k OS]

If you look in Hardware, Device Manager you will see that standard generic drivers are used for CD/DVD drives, so no.

You may have to update your burning software however once the DVD is in.

As robredz says, some CD burning software may not support DVD-writers.
On the hardware side, make sure the jumper setting on the back of the drive matches the outgoing drive - i.e. Master/Slave/Cable Select. Make sure you don't buy a drive that uses the newer SATA interface. I doubt your PC will have that connector.

your device manager will tell you whether it is a S ATA or an ATA 100 IF ITS s ata then you need a sata drive f its ATA 33/100 then you need an IDE drive.
both you can get for under £20 with Nero burning software included at
    www.ebuyer.com
    look under conponents
    CD/DVD Drives
    then either
    3.5 IDE Drives http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142275
    or
    3.5 SATA Drives http://www.ebuyer.com/product/151827

The new DVD Rewriter installed inplace of the CD rewriter with no problems just as described above. I was amazed that I didn't need to fiddle with the software. Even existing Nero recognised the DVD drive and gives suitable menus. Overall a 10/10 experience.

(Now making plenty of backups - The plan is, next week, to 'upgrade' from W2k to XP. Fortunately my friend says he'll help - just as well because I suspect I'll quickly out of my comfort zone! Why? - increasing number of applications are no longer supported in W2k e.g. latest zonealarm, sketchup...)

    Thanks again,
