My OH and son have tried to set up the Xbox live connection. apparently the Xbox has 'found' the wireless network but says it can't connect to it. we've bought the wireless adaptor from game thinking this was what we needed but no job as yet. thanks

right go to the network tab might be called network settings on the dashboard then go to test network connection and let the xbox test the connection, report back what section the device fails on

Sorry it doesn't say that. It says network adaptor: USB Wireless, then
    Wireless network: not connected

yes they have entered the wpa key apparently and they have followed all the steps kindly provided above - and still nothing. any other ideas please. My son has had to go to bed now. we've been at this for 2 days now - why does everything seem so complicated to us when everyone else seems to manage ok?
