Homeplug Question

I'm considering getting a homeplug set to connect to a Profile 2 Bluray player (Sony BDP-S550), but I have a question - how many Homeplugs do I need to buy?

My cable modem is sat right next to my PC in an upstairs bedroom. The Bluray player is downstairs in the lounge.

It appears to me that the Homeplug does not have In and Out sockets, so do I need to buy 3 units - one to connect to the modem, another to connect to the PC (both in the same room) and a third downstairs to connect to the Bluray?

Thanks for your help...

How many network sockets are on the cable modem? If there's more than one, you can connect one to the PC and the other to a Homeplug. You then only need another homeplug for the Bluray player.

There are a couple of pretty pictures on the Broadbandbuyer website. Click to enlarge. (You don't have to use Microlink plugs, by the way!!)

The Homeplug setup is a network system, so instead of having network cable running around your house you use the electrical wiring system through the plugs. This means that the Blu Ray player effectively becomes a part of your home network, which you can then access via any other device which is connected to the network. This is just like connecting a laptop or another pc. So as Conor says you just need to connect the router to the Homeplug and then the BluRay player into another. You may need to configure all three items so that they can be recognised. It depends on your router and the OS on your PC.
  • If you only have one port on your cable modem then consider using a net switch rather than paying for another £50 Homeplug. Depending on your electrics you might find speeds are not that great - they weren't for me between floors, I could rarely get more than 4MB against the advertised 70.

    * THIS * and * THIS * may be helpful to you. There is an explanatory video on the second one but it may take a moment or two to load (particularly now a link to it has been posted on MSE!)

For the setup you require, only two would be required. You just need them to create a simple bridge from upstairs to downstairs

Cat5e cable will always be better, though, and it costs nothing in electricity to run. Each powerline adaptor will, typically, consume 4.5 watts (some use more) and most people leave them plugged in permanently, so they are running 24/7.

If you're going the powerline route from new, be sure to buy 200 Mb/sec ones!

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

  • If you'd only asked this question a fortnight ago, I had 2 200mbs ones for sale, went for a song on ebay :(

Yeah, I saw those - nearly bought them as spares!

You were very unlucky on price; they usually fetch about £70.

    I felt for you.

    Thanks for all your replies.

There is only one RJ45 socket on my modem (ntl: Cable Modem) so it looks like I probably need a switcher.

I would upgrade to a cable router, so a modem and switch together. If you stick to a good brand, you'll have a better piece of hardware than a freebie.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.
