I'm with London Energy who are part of the EDF Energy group. Only been with them about 6 weeks but no problems so far. They have an online tariff which is much cheaper than the standard tariff.

Have been with SWEB (EDF) didn't want the name London on my bill, been with them since just before March 2005, and are still the cheapest for me. They have been very good and have UK call centre.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

EDF are one of the 'big boys' and I haven't seen lots of complaints (unlike some other suppliers) so if they are cheapest I would go for them.
  • Will i have to pay a charge kind of rental to British gas because it is their pipes that the gas is transported in. I ask because my brother has to pay some sort of rental charge aswell as his gas supply!??

The pipes to your home will either be owned by Transco, or if a quite new home the possibility of another firm (Gas Transporter).

This is where the additional fee comes into play, these new companies charge more than Transco for gas to pass through their pipes, so the supplier has to pass that additional fee on, for the vast majority of people it is Transco who own the pipes, it should say on the back of your gas bill whether it is Transco or another Gas Transporter that owns the pipes to your property

The reason why newer properties seem to have these new gas transporters who own the pipes is they charge a lower fee to the builders for connecting the home up to gas, however they charge a higher fee for gas to be passed through their pipes.

So your pipes could be owned by Transco (high possibility) or ESP Ltd, GTC Pipelines, Independent Pipelines Ltd, SSE Pipelines or a smaller player.

it's transco's pipe's not british gas! you don't pay anything to britsih gas if you are with another supplier. your brother must have to pay a standing charge to his gas supplier.

Not always true - see the post from BexTech above.

British Gas trading do own some pipelines as stated above.

If you check on your gas bill, your meter point reference number should be there (may be referred to as MPR). If it starts with a 7, you're in an area supplied by an Independant GAs Transporter (IPGT) and will be subject to an additional charge, normally around £30 p.a.
