Sky plus question. Can I just buy box?

I don't have Sky but I assume you can just ring them to upgrade your contract to Sky+ ?
Could you not make up a voucher to say 'One Sky+ Subscription' or something, then pay when they ring to upgrade in the New Year? That way you will have something to wrap & put under the tree

Bearing in mind how little Sky charge for a full Sky+ installation including box, how much did it all end up costing, including the cost of the box?
Well the box cost me about £40 i think, and the additional LNB and cabling came to £90 quid.
I didn't actually get the 2nd LNB until about 3 months after I got the box as well.
There was a particular reason I didn't go through Sky for the installation but I can't remember what it was.0
