It probably was that.
My son was in Abu Dhabi a little while ago and used his card to get cash from the machine, the machine kept his card, so he was stuck in a strange country with no money.
It's always worth giving the bank a ring before you go abroad to let them know where your card will be used I think?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

I hope they don't block his card - he's away for another three months so not sure how he'll sort it out as he never has time to go ashore (he used his card at Disneyland the day before he joined his ship). He's only 17, obviously doesn't have his head screwed on properly yet..!
They've called another three times, same recorded message, I think I'll go into the bank tomorrow to see what they advise.
Yep, Egg Card do this when I use my card abroad. First time I was suspicious and rang them. They confirmed it was just a security measure. Second time I just responded to the automated message.
You need to ask your son to ring his bank. Alternatively, if you know your son's password you could just pretend to be him and confirm you made the purchase. Egg, if I recall asked for certain letters of my password and then I just confirm I used my card. All done by an automated computer. Takes about 20 seconds. But it is probably better your son ring them.0 -

In most cases the card is then unblocked immediately.0 -
It will have been genuine. I work for ltsb and have recieved one of these calls myself. He needs to call the bank, as they probably will block his card.Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

It's not just when the card is used abroad. Well it isn't with Egg any way.
Anything they think is suspicious (like signing for - instead of chip&pinning -£20-worth of petrol at a local station we often use ) elicits a phone call.
Went to Scottish island recently (out of easy mobile contact) and so had to phone in advance so they didn't block the card if I spent anything their system could class as unusual.0
