Java software

If I look in my ProgramFiles folder on my C: drive I have a folder called Java which has the following subdirectories:

jre 1.5.0_06
jre 1.5.0_09
jre 1.5.0_10
jre 1.5.0_11
jre 1.6.0_01
jre 1.6.0_02
jre 1.6.0_03
jre 1.6.0_05
jre 1.6.0_07

If I look at Properties it says there are approx 586MB of files.

Can I remove some of these and free up some space?

If so what is the best way to do it and what do I need to keep?

  • Java is used for displaying content on websites I believe, so I would leave them.

So when someone buts some interactive content on a site that is written in Java you can see it via your browser.

    Thank you Martin Lewis !
  • Java is currently Version 6 Update 11 and available here - http://java.com/en/download/

You can safely uninstall all other versions thereby releasing some disk space.

Go to your control panel java applet and update to the latest version.

Then uninstall any earlier versions (< 1.6_update11) via the "add/remove software" control panels option.

Should then be safe to delete any left over < 1.6_update11 files (if any).

    Many thanks for the replies.

I've now got the latest Java and got rid of all the previous versions so Java now only takes up about 75MB instead of nearly 600MB.

    Thanks.
