    Get a room.

    Nice advice there.

Anyway, it's pretty simple as I said in my last post. OP could get an external drive, sure. I'm recommend something that I think technically is a long term valued solution. The new laptop is.

If the OP can afford it without streching, then a new laptop is the best option. And if not, then fine just an external hard drive. sure it's MSE, but that doesn't mean bad technical advice is better as it's cheaper. All the options should be reviewed :)

    Nice advice there.

Hey! Tread carefully - I am merciless.

    :p

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

  • The OP is using a laptop that soon won't even support windows messenger, never mind the bundles of XP updates installed and other various applications.

My point is loaner, as I've said several times not but yet you choose to ignore... the op can get an external drive to solve the problem posted, but from a technical point of view a new laptop has better value due to the specs, so would be a good option IF the op can afford it.

Read that above paragraph now and this time don't come back and argue that I'm not saying an external hard drive is an option?!??!?!

  • No problem BG.. Good luck with whatever you decide :) It seems some people can't give their opinion without directing abuse to other people on this board. Shame really but hey ho.

the main thing taking up my space is my music which is about 22gig's.

22gb on music? This is days worth of music!! Why don't you buy an external hard drive, transfer over 1/2 to 3/4 of your music? You can't possibly need all that music in one sitting!!

i know it is alot of music but i cant live without my music.

it sounds like my original idea of an external hard drive is not one that people seem to be keen to suggest.

is it possible to get a wireless external hard drive, my laptop very rarely leaves my house but i am always moving from one room to another.

yes you can buy them, but at thiese prices you may as well get a new lap top!!

I know what you're saying about your music being important. But 22gb is a hell of a lot, are you sure you can't condense a lot of it down and stick what is not required onto a external hard drive?

MK, you missed my point completely, your recommendation in post 2 changed somewhere along the way, without any reason. One minute you suggested the same thing I was suggesting (a new internal HD), then you went to the other extreme, and said buy a new laptop. Then you said buy an external drive (which was a bad idea in post 2), or buy a new laptop.

Questioning other peoples ability (when they recommended the same approach as you did in post 2), and then complaining of other peoples abuse, is a weird thing to do.

This is a moneysaving forum, to constantly buy shiny new kit to run imaginary applications is an expensive hobby.

Wow you can't leave this argument alone?

Technical advice isn't necessarily about how to save money now, but how to save money in the long run. Lets say you have an old desktop pc. You can upgrade the RAM for £40, upgrade the hard drive for £30 or £40, upgrade the CPU (limited to socket type though) for £40 odd, upgrade the drives in it.. but one day very soon, you'd have to buy a new pc too, so add on the £200 for that and you've reached near £400 over the course of a couple of years maybe because of all the upgrades.

When buying the new pc in the first place would have covered the upgrades. The op states they listen to music... Not sure which application but all applications are becoming much more memory intese. Thus the OP would need to upgrade RAM sometime soon as her laptop will undoubtedy be very very slow at the moment, which no disk defragment or cccleaner will solve.

Once again post 2 was a direct repsonse to her question, but putting my technical knowledge and experience on top, I would highly advise a new laptop, but only if the OP can afford it.

The problem with using an external hard drive for your music OP, is that you only have USB 1.0 which is an old USB standard, and MUCH slower than the updated USB 2.0, meaning data transfer and streaming is heavily effected. If you play music from your external hard drive you may find problems.

Also if you want a wireless external hard drive, it would connect to your network rather than your computer. You'd need a wireless home NAS for that (network-attached storage). These will most likely be half teh price of a new laptop for any useful one :)

  • A USB Hard Drive connected to a USB 1.x port can provide data at a high enough rate for streaming audio and video, but the low amount of RAM could be an issue that could affect the quality of playback.
