Cluster Flies - is there a solution?

This might not on the right thread so feel free to move to correct position on the forum!

Daughter has the attic bedroom and she tapes the windows closed because of the influx of cluster flies all year round. It's really 'orrible!

What I'd like to ask is, has anybody else had any experience of these and if so, how did you get rid of the little blighters? We'd rather not use insecticides is at all possible and I heard somewhere (can't remember where!) that chestnuts placed on a windowsill emit some sort of gas which is repellent to these insects and they just b00ger off!
ANY advice would be very welcome!

Norty.

They like to come in out of the cold this time of year. I use citronella spray/canisters in my attic (not insecticide) and this seems to persuade them there are better places to go - next door probably lol.

Make sure the room is as sealed as possible too, to deter them.

We use insecticide burner things a couple of times a year - late autumn and late spring - seems to keep the numbers right down. The other solution is to kill all eathworms in your garden as this breaks the life cycle.

I’m not sure that this is the same or not, but for the last 2 years I have experienced heaps of flies in my attic, it’s so annoying I don’t know where they come from. When I open the attic door I get bombarded by the blighters. Why are they suddenly there and how do I get rid? Currently using those sticky traps but would rather stop all together as the attic floor is covered in them….
