Can someone please help me sort out the problems I am having my laptop ?
Last week I couldn't seem to watch any videos on windows media player, I could get sound but no picture.
Anyway, a couple of people on here said it was something to do with CODEC's, someone even posted a link to download, I downloaded the link but whatever it was, it seemed to really screw up my lapptop.
SO
I decided to wipe my computer clean and found a way of restoring factory settings, it did improve some things, however !, it has created some other issues (bear with me)
1. If I shut the lid on the laptop, I come back to laptop, where the screen resolution id rubbish ! it seems to go to 800x 600 screen resolution, I get a dialogue box that tells me I need to adjust my screeen resolution to 1280x800, I do it and its then ok until I shut the lid and come back
Q- How can I stop the laptop from doing this ?
2. My default browser was internet explorer, but I went onto a site that works better on mozilla, so I downloaded it, BUT when I use this Browser it won't play yoo tube type video's, it is because I need to install adobe flash player (apparently)- it comes up with this message.
"Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.
Anyway I try and install it, but my pc always refuses to down load it- it tells me "the following applications need to be closed before the adobe flah player plug in can be installed " - (firefox)- option to "try again"
Anyway I close firefox and it still doesn't download !!!
Can anyone please help?

            1. I've not come across the screen resolution changing when shutting the lid but you can certainly change what happens when you shut the lid i.e. Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced
 2. Try the following in Internet Explorer:
To uninstall Flash, please follow Adobe's instructions, listed here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_14157
Once you're done, restart your computer and follow Adobe's instructions for reinstalling Flash: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

Frankly the link above and the video is a worthwhile watch for anyone!
To play videos do away with Media Player and stick with VLC, a very well known, respected, media player.

I was suggesting to change what happens when you shut the lid of your laptop. On an XP machine this option is located at Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced then under the heading, "When I close the lid of my portable computer". If you set it to Do nothing then this should resolve your issue. For a more permanent fix you may want to consider updating your video card drivers but, and I mean this in the nicest of ways, you may want to get a tech savy person to do this...re VLC, that was the download that screwed up my pc before and I then had to wipe it clean.
Are you sure it was VLC and not a codec pack someone suggested...0
