NHS 24 told me I could use nurofen and calpol, and stagger the dose to help relieve DD's symtpoms better and keep the temperature benefit regular, so for example first dose of calpol followed by nurofen 2 hours later, then calpol 2 hours after that, rather than giving her both doses at the same time. Of course you still need to be super careful about not giving her too much in any 24 hour period etc., but if she is suffering then alleviating her symptoms till the antibiotics kick in is probably the best you can do for her.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

If she has a temperature, don't aim a fan at her. Thats my only advice. My nephew is 1 and he had a ridiculously high temp/ear infection, so much that my SIL took him to the hospital (out of hours doctors) and they said NEVER blow a fan on them as it confuses the bodies temperature and doesnt actually cool them down.0

If a child has a fever then they should be sponged down with a sponge soaked with tepid water. Never keep them wrapped up to 'burn' the fever off as an adult with a temperature might do, as overheating can have deadly consequences for little kids and babies.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Hi
Try and time your Calpol / Nurofen doses so that you give the nurofen just before bed time. It lasts longer and will help through the night.
My little boy got alot of ear infections with very high temperatures. He had grommits fitted when he was three and we've had no problems since.0 -
yes amoxycillian does have to stay in the fridge - be wary though that if you have been given the yellow looking one it contains additives(to colour it) that can cause hyperactivity - only boots do it without the colourant.
My son has antibiotics everyday prophalactic ones but we end up having amoxycillian aswell about every two months for regular infections - so i know a thing or two about antibiotics.0 -
Antibiotics in the fridge (it's to kill any bacteria that may be introduced by the water, air or the syringe. I learned that at college

Calpol gives DS2 the runs so we use the cheapo chemist stuff. Or rather, we usually use 6+, prescribed by a doctor with the dosage as he is a little brat at taking anything. Wrapped in a towel, syringe, straddling him and he still fights or makes himself sick.
And your not alone with the dire-rear, DS2 has had it all weekend too. :rolleyes:0 -
MEDICAL ADVICE
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about. While discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments and how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable we ask you specifically not to discuss what to do in the event of certain medical problems (please see this rule on the Health Board). Bearing that in mind
MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Has she been anywhere near anyone with a cold sore recently?
Even if she hasn't, the cold sore herpese virus is such an indestructible little bu&&er that it can be picked up almost anywhere after someone with a cold sore has passed.
If there are lesions in her mouth, it could easily be a primary herpetic infection. The first time kids get exposed to the cold sore virus can make the inside of the mouth very sore indeed.
If the soreness of the mouth seems to be the main thing, I would pop her to a dentist (Drs are pretty rubbish inside the mouth).
With all viral things - and infections generally, keeping up the fluids is more important than a day or two without food. Get her to drink plenty of water.
BUT - get advice from a Dr ASAP if you are worried, or a dentist if the problems are in the mouth. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
dear OP, I'm sorry but if I had a sick child i would not be on here posting, I'd be down to the doctors, hospital or whatever service that is nearest to you.
Don't feel yopu are wasting anyones time, better to be safe then have things get worse later.
Hope things are better today.0 -
