Hello,
I have a 406 2001 reg, the car has aprox 60 k on the clock.
We have found out that the gear box needs stripping back and repairing or replaceing.
The car is out of warranty.
However, I would exspect the gear box to last a little longer that 60k! We have had the car since 2002.
Does anybody know if I have a leg to stand on here? do I have any consumer rights, because this is going to cost me a lot of money to fix, I dont want the stupid car anyway as I already replaced it, but cant sell it with a dodge gear box and now the Mot has run out.
Any advice would be really great,
TIA

You will not have any consumer rights
I very much doubt if you will get any goodwill gesture from the manufacturer or dealer(if you bought from one)for a car that is between 4 and 5 years old with 60k on the clock; especially as you bought it second hand.0 -
Even if the Peugeout did offer anything (not really likley) it'd be a contribution towrds whatever the replacement gearbox would cost, at the main dealer. Then you'd part with more than by sourcing a used/reconditioned unit.
Once you do search on www you'll get loads offered to you, have you done this yet?
Or the more costly, initially, is to get an exchange reconditioned unit from a specialist - then you'll have a better warranty.
Are you anywhere Hertfordshire, there is a reasonable company here, that do most of the stuff that local garages use. Just ask & I'll put their details here.
& what you should do, whatever you choose, is to allow for a new clutch, at the same time. Yes it is more £$£$ , but you'll be saving the labour cost, for it's future replacement.

To be honest 60K is short, but not especially abnormal for a gearbox to need an overhaul. OK, generally they last at least twice as long, but if the car has been in city traffic its whole life this may not be out of the ordinary.0
