Windows live hotmail - is this suspicious?

Hi

My brother just rang me saying when he tries to send email from his Windows Live Hotmail account he gets something come up along the lines of:

To continue sending your message, please solve the puzzle. Sorry for the inconvenience--these puzzles help us stop spammers.
Confirm your e-mail account.

He's not as yet confirmed his account so I don't know if some 'puzzle' will then appear or what.
Anyone know if this is genuine or something dodgy? He's never had it before.
I've googled but can't see much about it but at least one other person asked about it here

Thanks

    do they mean CATPCHAS?

a CAPTCHA is like when you sign up to facebook (for example) and have to input a code from an image before you register to stop spammers creating accounts

    Thanks for replies.

Earlier on I did end up at this page about CAPTCHAs which mentions Hotmail amongst others so it could be that.

Didn't really want to risk confirming the email account yet until we felt more confident it was safe to do so. If it does lead to a CAPTCHA, would they do this randomly? As mentioned, he's never had this before ( nor has free4440273 I assume).

^The Captcha would make sense; that would not concern me (as GG explained above) but the idea of a 'puzzle'...never seen that before, no.

I think it probably is a CAPTCHA (or HIP)

    See here
(Note the page opens with "Windows Live ID" in the selection box so change this to Windows Live Hotmail Classic and then choose the second entry in the FAQ list "Why do I receive a set of distorted letters etc")

What do you think people? Go for it?
