  • Now Tescos refund the difference in price between the advertised price and what you actually pay.(It may even be double the difference, I cant remember the exact wording on the notice behind the CS desk)
  • Just to clarify the situation on pricing.

    Unless it is a small shop, all goods must be priced so that the customer does not have to ask someone how much it is. If you cannot readily determine the price of an item, the shop is not really complying with the legislation.

    Also Tesco, and other major stores, do keep a record of all goods and how much they are sold for. They need to for their own requirements and for audit trails etc. For example, a Trading Standards Officer investigating a complaint like this can require and demand records of previous prices. If they cannot produce them, it would not go very well in court (if it got that far).

    The main thing to do though is always ensure you know how much something is before buying it.

    Check your receipt before leaving the store. If something is overpriced, check the item again and speak to a staff member. Accompany them to where the item is to demonstrate that the item is on sale at the price you claim it to be.

    This happened to me with some white wine. The assistant, when I complained, checked the price and said "Yeah, that's for the Garnacha". Err, except that is red and this is white wine and in a totally different place. Basically, the staff member did not check properly.
  • One problem I find with Tesco etc is that the price may be advertised on the shelf edge, but the goods there may not be the item priced. I seem to regularly find items on the shelves are not the items described on the price tag. I keep having to check if the barcode numbers are the same if in any doubt.

  • Dont think so. I was overcharged on something last week in Tesco and got double the difference.

    Do Tesco actually advertise this policy or do they just hope people don't know about it and will skulk off?
  • Err - no, that's not what it says at all.

    Read 7(1)(b)(i). It states it must be in the vicinity of the product.

    That does not mean "somewhere in the shop". It means on or next to the product so that one can easily determine the price.

    BTW - it's an Order and not an Act. Are you sure you were reading the correct piece of legislation?
