  • Yeah, by the time people finally have money to spend, there won't be any decent shops left to spend it in.

There is a couple of things I've had my eye on for the past 6 months in The Pier.

People were in there buying today, but 2 wine glasses each, or a few xmas decorations. I didn't see any baskets full to the brim.

It wouldnt suprise me about WHsmiths, lets face it they sell
    CD's (cheaper in supermarket, online)
    Books (cheaper in supermarket, online)
Magazines (most people read online or can't afford it in current financial climate)
pens, bits and bobs...all stuff we can manage without or pilfer from work (sorry but when you need 1 paper clip I use one from work rather than buy a whole packet)

So the majority of their business is down the pan..pretty much like woolies was

But they also have a big presence in train-stations and the such-like.

    What about Boots?

Same problem as Woolworths, no specialism in the market.

The stationary is over-priced and you can get it cheaper at Tesco etc.
Entertainment and books are massively undercut on the internet.
The only thing they really have a corner on is magazines and I can't see that being enough.

Then again, Woolworths has been struggling as a company for over four years, since the Kingfisher split and no-one really noticed until recently.

Boots are fine, they've merged with Alliance this year and have the majority of prescription services, this brings in the money.
However, seemingly unbelievable but they need to invest more in the high end products in the smaller stores and get rid of the 3 for 2 bath rubbish for Christmas.
