Supposed old debt issue - help please??!?!

I arrived home from work today to a letter from 3 mobile and Lovell DCA. They are stating that I owe them £47.38 and that I must take action to get rid of my 'indebtedness'. However I haven't been a customer of 3 for nearly three years and have had no communication with them since then. I truly thought I have left them with no debt and have had no letters or any communications with them since 2005. They refused to discuss it with me as they have 'sold' the debt on to Lovell. I can't get hold of them either as there opening hours are wrong on the letter I received. They also say they bought the debt in September, why wasn't I warned or asked for payment IF! I owed anything which I firmly believe I don't. Now I understand this is a small amount of debt but it does really upset me. I have some huge debts from university so I know the other side of the coin too.
Where do I stand and does anyone know of any legal rights I have? I know it doesn't meet the 6 year thing I read on other threads. If you need any further details let me know. I have no correspondence or old bills or anything from 3 mobile. They must be desperate chasing a indebt grad for £47.38 but it does bother me, any help or advice would be a huge relief and much appreciated

Hi.
There have been a lot of people getting the same recently.

Looks like 3 have sold off a load of old accounts to this mob. Probably because they don't have any evidence or can't be bothered to chase.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

I would contact Lovell and dispute the debt and ask them for proof that this amount is owed.Proud to be dealing with my debts - DFW No: 712

I will do, I am using a template Fermi has written. It seems totally ridiculous to me. Thanks for the advice!0
