Netbook as a voice/music recorder

Hi...

I'm tempted to get myself a Netbook (probably the new Samsung) and to save myself some money (of getting a voice recorder) I'm thinking on installing Audacity onto the netbook and using this to record via a mic.

What I'd like to know is of any problems anyone can forsee with doing this - ie. what would the qulity of the recording be like on the netbooks? If you can direct me to any sources of relevent info I'd relly appreciate it.

Any tips on a mic? I'm thinking of recording singing lessons and similar sort of music live.

Thanks!

  • For reasonable quality you'll need an external audio interface and a mic. Quality will depend on these and not the netbook, though you'll need to get a Windows XP version. There's lot's of options so it depends on your budget. Cheap interfaces cost between £50-£100. You can get mics which plug into usb sockets which are OK. Samson do some and Alesis do one.

Not much use for live recording though.

You could look at stand alone recorders like the Edirol R09, Olympus LS-10, Zoom H2 and H4, Yamaha Pockettrack, M-Audio Microtrack (not version II as it has problems) and Tascam DR1. These have built in mics but can also take external mics.
