Can MBNA increase the Interest rate to ridiculous 34%?

  • My happiness didn't last for more than two days.

I called them today to re-check what I heard on Wednesday - well, it seems the lady who informed me about 5.9% rate reduction has given me wrong information!

    !!!!!!s!

    My commiserations.
This company seem to have a habit of making verbal promises and going back on them. Not sure if they are any worse than anyone else though.

Yes they can and they did it to me.

I suggest you complain, and take up their time. Tell them that you want to take it further. Dont get angry, just ask for your rate to be reinstated.

I have an MBNA Virgin Card that went up from 18.9 to 35%. After discussion they dropped the rate back down. I asked for 16,9 which is the rate they offer new customers but they wouldn't give it to me. They said that I should be on 24.9%!

Personally I find it really annoying that I keep on reading that the Virgin Card has the longest 0% deal when at the end they will probably raise rates significantly. They have lost my trust!.
  • I have had a slightly different problem with MBNA, they took over my charity credit card (yes I know I should change it) and they won't uphold a dispute because they say it is not bad enough - in who's opinion is the dispute not bad enough, not mine or I wouldn't have started it in the first place. I have been told to complain to trading standards, which I have done about the original company and MBNA... Their customer service really is rubbish

Yes. So can I. That's why I have four accounts with them on zero balance (I did BTs away from them to get LOB deals elsewhere). If they weren't so greedy and offered reasonable LOB deals, they would have some of my business.
Unfortunately, not everyone is in a position to vote with their feet.
I notice that those CC cheques they used to send me with increasing regularity have totally dried up in recent weeks. I imagine their next trick will be to slash my limits or close my accounts.

I managed to get my MBNA rate reduced by speaking to someone in their Account Review team - 0800 028 9170. Customer loyalty said they couldn't help me but then I tried this number and had some (limited) success.
Hope this is of some use to someone.
