Barclay card - illness = Missed Payment

Options
Please can someone help me?

My Mum has just realised that she missed her barclay card payment - due two days ago and is on the phone to them at the moment. She's been really ill the last few days and has had a very bad result from an xray so completely forgot to make the payment.

If she had a letter from her doctor is there any chance they might remove the mark on her credit rating.
Trying to only spend money when I absolutely have to.
Barclaycard: £4559-1500 = £3059 (Will have £900 to add to that end of September)
Loan from Friend = £2000

The immediate words that spring to mind are 'are you having a laugh'?

She signed an agreement and hasn't stuck to that agreement.

I was seriously ill earlier this year - much more than a bad result from an X-ray may I add - an emergency life-saving operation. I was also unemployed for 4 months. Yet I still managed to make payments on time.

When will this 'it wasn't my fault' attitude change on MSE?

Edited to add: The memory thing doesn't affect anything...simply a note on the fridge or writing a reminder would solve that.

She should take responsibility and you should not keep trying to find excuses.

Make the payment ASAP (now). The chances are it won't be reported to the CRA's as a missed payment, though you can expect to get a £12 late payment charge.
One late payment has a negliable effect on a credit rating in any case so you should have no concerns over that even if they did report it. A letter from a doctor would be worthless.

Hi there; exel1966 is totally correct..If the payment is only late (I.E a new statement has not been generated) and not missed, there will be no mark applied on a credit file... it is only after the second cycle that it gets reported to a cra.

    With regard to the twelve pound charge: Call them up and explain the circumstances regarding any medical issues and medications. They should refund it on compassionate grounds.. it would have to be a pretty harsh advisor not to refund in these circumstances; your mum can authorise you to discuss the account on her behalf while on the phone if she would prefer that;

Providing she has a good payment record they would potentially refund it anyway (many companies will offer a refund on a "one off " basis)

    hope this helps

  • Payment is all made, made it when we called barclaycard the second she remembered the payment was due.

daveboy you do make a very good point and you're right - she's broken the terms of the contract by making a late payment. But I'm doing all I can to try and minimse the effects. If you had the chance for them to remove the mark on the credit file would you do it? I'm sure most people would.

Cheers Exel1996, we've since spoken to barclaycard and the guy on the other end said we had a good case and that a doctors letter 'might' help. I guess we can just do everything we can and if it doesn't work and they won't amend the file, at least we've tried.

Good to know it won't have a significant impact.

  • We've managed to get the charge refunded which is really good of them - I didn't even have to ask, they just did it when I explained the circumstances. G1987, thanks for your advice there - that sounds far too good to be true (in a good way). The guy from barclay card said that something would go on the credit file - maybe he'd got his facts wrong??

If a statement hasn't been printed then its severely doubtful.. Your mum would have to miss the payment, get a bill and then miss the following payment before she was considered "delinquent".. I think the advisor may say that because technically they "could" report it, but its really unlikely! It will be an automated system.

I used to work for a firm and to the best of my knowledge its a pretty standard system. If in doubt just check her file!
    Cheers

What is wrong with some people on this board, the holier than thou attitude stinks with some folk.

You are so lucky if you remember to pay on time when in poor health! some people don't, this lady came on here to ask for advice, not to be made to feel like "she's having a laugh", which by reading her post she wasn't.

There are some wonderful kind people who help on here without such venom, then there are people that just go in for the jugular - unbelievable.

OP I hope you get your problem sorted out.
