Help with sound please

Hi i logged on today and the icon on the bottom right to turn the sound off and on has disappeared, i have tried looking for it but cant find it, could someone help

Start - Control Panel - Sounds and Audio Devices.

There should be a box next to place volume icon in taskbar - make sure that is ticked

just to clarify i have windows vista, and went to control panel i have sound, i can i think permently disable sound, but i dont want that i want to know how i can find out where my volume icon has gone so i can turn sound off and on when i need to, hope someone can help

Apologies that was the XP solution

Vista - right click the taskbar - properties -notification area tab - and the box to tick should be there

thankyou, i found it but the volume is a faded colour and will not let me click on it, so im confused on what could of caused this to happen, the only thing did last night differently was shut down my laptop, with the sound still on (normally dont have the sound on)

Odd - I'll try and get back on my Vista machine later (on XP at the moment) and see if I can help.
