is he paying his rent ok....what about heat light and power.....certainly restrict his internet access...for a start....get a few big black bin liners ready to put his stuff outside....round up all your biggest mates....if his room doesn't have its own lock....start selling his cd collection....or better still....start eating all his "hi value" food....keep a note of the cost til you recoup all thats owed....

and before I get flamed....some of the abouve can be taken as "tongue in cheek"....you decide which yourselves....either way....he's going to be a problem in later months....sort it now....do you really think he's going to be the one cleaning the place when you move out to make sure you get your deposit back?....I dont think so....sort him out now....

"JAMESM:Yeah, and that wouldn't result in a huge confrontation, determination never to pay back the money for unreasonable behaviour and an awkward living situation from then on..."

big fight now or big fight later and more debt on you....he's a waster....ask him in a reasonable manner...no joy?....get rid of him....small pain now....big pain later
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

cut off his internet connection now - otherwise he will end up owing you more and still not pay. If he can afford good food he must have some cash so you are just not a priority to him I'm afraid.....his attitude to date says to me that it is likely he intends to never pay you - just see how long he can string you out for.

As poster above says confrontation now or confrontation later ...it's your choice - but now is cheaper for you as he hasn't run up huge debts yet!

So if you cut off his access, will you effectively be freezing the amount he owes you from the internet bill at least until you let him back on? IE you won't make him pay for a share of the internet for the weeks he doesn't have access to it? well at least it'll save him some money, although you'll be paying his share of the bill too for those months. But as others have said you probably will have a confrontation over it. Especially if he needs it for uni work over the holidays when libraries etc are closed.

i imagine he's thinking that since you have enough money to get by, it wouldn't be a hardship for you to subsidise him for now and then he would pay you back when his loan comes through. I guess you need to disavow him of this notion otherwise he might think his behaviour is fine. see if he can pay it off a few quid at a time, and ask him when he expects his loan to be paid to him. At least he is now making an effort to get the loan sorted out, even if it took him a while.

  • Or you could always ring his parents! Worked a treat for me at the end of second year, ended up with a cheque from them and a half hearted apology from the housemate for leaving me in the lurch. Don't disconnect their Internet though, as you'll just end up paying for it anyway when you re-split the bill. Make them pay!
