dla advise

(i have posted this on the disability and dosh forum as well - sorry for the double post, but i was not too sure where to post it!! - oh, and i realise that the title should be adviCe!!)

Hi all

i am about to start the long process of completing the dla application form for my daughter. SHe has been previously diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder, and at the moment, school are about to make a referral to CAMHS re possible Aspergers.

To help with this, i am thinking of joining the benefits and work website - has anyone any experience of this, as it costs £20 to join, and i dont want to waste money when it is really tight at the moment.

From looking at the criteria which has been previously posted, i think she may qualify for low care/ low mobility, but not really sure on how to word it properly. As i have my own health issues, going to the CAB is really difficult, so i am going to try and fill it in the best i can - but then if i need to go to appeal, to get more help then. Probably seems a daft way of doing it, but i need to get the ball rolling!!

Does anyone know of any other (pref free) sites which may be able to help me decribe her needs - particularly her problems with communication and concentration - ie processing skills.

DO NOT PAY TO JOIN THIS WEBSITE. There is plenty of free advice on the National Autism Website and several autism forums.

This guide gives you an idea of what you should be putting. It's a bit out of date with relation to the DLA claim form questions as they altered the forms last year but the advice is still spot on:

I can verify what Conor advises-I mainly used the Cerebra advice for completing the form for my son who is autustic and his claim was sucessful for HRC,LRM in just under 3 weeks. His senco at school completed the section at the back as the 'other person who knows the claimant',and gave his specialist as the other contact as his GP never sees him.I did the form in small font on the computer, cutting it out and sticking it in. This gave me loads of room to give examples.

    Hope you are sucessful.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
  • Whilst B&W might not be the very best site for all cases it can be and has been a massive help to alot of people, they helped me convince the dwp that they shouldnt stop £90 a week of my benefits last year,so it was money well spent, they do offer excellent guides for claims. But of course there are free alternatives out there

  • good luck- we used the various free resources out there to fill out ds's forms and was awarded lower rate for both care and mobility in less than 4 weeks from sending in his forms (that included them writing to his consultant in that time too) ds has dyspraxia and asd.

thanks for your best wishes guys

i have applied for her a few years back, got knocked back but didnt have the strength to appeal. Its good to hear that others have been successful - it gives me hope!
  • I am a member of B and W. I have not needed to use their guides but I have read them and they are very helpful.

There is a news section that is worth reading but much of it is free to access.

There are plenty of free guides so you so not need to spend this money

It also goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that if you trawl through this section of the forum, you will find probably all the info you need. There isn't a lot of stuff that hasn't been covered.

Oh, but you do have to filter out some of the waffle from the "fringe";)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
