Completely legal too! (well, I think!)
Treat others as you would like to be treated :A
  • Most of the major Linux companies make free copies of there software available for download just depends if you have any favorites. Most are iso cd images that you download and then burn onto CDs or DVDs. This is quite a large download.

    Try

Also many of the Linux mags have copies of Linux on then if you cant download

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
  • fedora is good, thats the version i use.
would use it all the time if i could, but have to run stupid windows for alot of the stuff i need :(
only problem is it takes ages to download, but that a slight penalty for a superior operating system
  • im gonna use the college version i think. i hope my customers like it

i will actually use the fedora version

Thanks for all the help people

Just a word in for the Ubuntu project. As well as offering downloadable ISOs, they'll ship free CDs (although these can take a while, and mine was dodgy so I ended up downloading the ISO anyway).

Ubuntu is included in this months PC Format cover disc. I'm toying with the idea of buying a 2nd hard drive for Linux rather than partitioning. Less chance of me screwing XP up.

Yeah Ubuntu gets my vote too.

The latest version (Breezy) is great. I've always used Fedora (or Red Hat) but find Ubuntu quicker/easier to setup. Little things such as mounting an NTFS drive, setting up repositories are quicker to do.

The only thing so far that is a pain, is no inbuilt WPA support. There are packages and commands you need to run to install it, just thought something so common would be included in the distro.

Just go to http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ and download it. The 1 cd version should be enough to get you started, and save you time downloading a whole dvd.

Linux is great, although it's not ideally suited for anyone that plays lots of games, and it doesn't have such good hardware support as Windows. Personally, I still can't fully switch. The Windows OS may not be perfect, but there are some great apps for it, and people are often familiar with it.

  • If you visit <A href="http://distrowatch.com/">Distrowatch</A&gt; you will find reviews and information on a host of Linux Distributions, from popular to obscure.

If you want to go for Fedora, then their listings on Fedora also provide links for related websites which can provide you with valuable information about Fedora & how it works.

    Always worth a look.

Do you know of lots of people who want to buy a machine with Linux on it? You're limiting your market quite a bit.

Hmmm was wondering the same myself. XP Home can be picked up for about £50 these days. I'm not against Linux, it's just it does require a lot of time and input from the user, especially if they aren't familiar with it. Maybe offering the choice of Linux, or Windows (with additional cost), or both, would be more beneficial.
