    It depends what you want to do. Most software doesn't really cater for them yet in order to take advantage of the cores, but it'll come in time. It's the same with 64-bit archictecture.

    They're still very good at encoding, compiling etc... anything with multiple threads and they're very effective.

    As far as games are concerned though a single core Athlon64 is fine. Most motherboards should support both, so you could upgrade at a later date should you want dual core.
