in future you should weigh the item yourself on some kitchen scales, add on a bit for packaging so for example weigh a jiffy bag or box etc, if its very to close to 250g, 500g etc then charge for the next increment to cover yourself.

you can always refund a bit if you overcharge but you can't ask for more if you undercharge

Just as ebay is BUYER BEWARE it is also SELLER BEWARE , you have made a loss on a sale, you cannot blame or charge the buyer extra , it's your fault
Learn from it and try not to do it again:A
  • its not that i want to rip people of its just if thats the only way i can make sure this doesnt happen to me again then i am willing to do it.

i was selling my sons presents and anything else i could find to help us get through xmas, as my partner who was self employed is out of work and can not get any money for 6 weeks so was not planning on making a career out of it.
    (nothing left 2 sell)

never the less as people have said its my problem nothing i can do so best jsut to move on and forget about it

Perhaps it may be worth getting a copy of the Royal Mail price guides so you are aware of the difference in price brackets. In the future if your item is close to the upper limit then charge postage for the one above. If there is a big difference you can always refund some postage afterwards if it falls into a lower bracket. Its a shame you have had a bad experience just when the money is so vital, but don't give up. We have all made mistakes of some sort, just learn from it and move on.

maximum weight for 2nd class is 1kg with price of £2.49, 1st class for 1kg is £3.08

£6.85 is the price for standard parcels between 2.01kg-4kg. if as you say it was 100g over then it means it was 2.1kg? The cost for standard parcels up to 2kg is £4.20 not £3.75.

How heavy was the item exactly ? I wonder about this postage. Anyways as people have said it's entirely the sellers problem if they display the wrong postage, it doesn't sound as if the buyer is being rude at all, i know i wouldn't be happy if someone requested more money from me to cover their mistake.

I made a similar mistake. I sold a really cheap item to get rid of it. It ended at 50p. I charged 90p postage thinking it would be large letter. I packaged it, but rather craply really and the woman at the post office put it through a the large letter hole, but still charged me for a packet! That was £1.45 rather than 72p! If I had only been posting one item I would have known before I paid and be asked for her to correct her mistake but I didn't realised until I looked at the receipt!

I actually made a loss on the item, so I know to pack it properly next time!

This happened to me too on a couple of things I posted but on e of my lovely buyers was so impressed in what she recived she refunded the extra postage into my papal account without any communication, I was really surprised it just goes to prove there are some decent people out there!!!!!:rudolf:

Not sure I am getting the price of the postage correct- sounds like a postoffice error on the scales- or some very illegal PO workers (I hope its the former!)

I don't know if it helps, but as I sell in batches of about 10, each item different, each weighs differently, I take a weight for each and work out a price for each. Then I write it down on a chart. When I come to post items, if the fee is any more then I have allowed for, I question it. I am never sure I trust the scales as things can look like they are leaning on the scales in a strange way. I haven't had too many problems so far, just one or two where it turned out it was infact leaning at an angle which added extra to the items weight. It was being pushed/pressed down by being caught on a wierd metal frame which was on the glass shield that sat behind the scales. As soon as I released it from being caught, the weight also released. If I hadn't of questioned it, I would have had to pay extra. It doesn't hurt to question something if you are unsure. Especially if your original quote was so very different.

Its not really ok to ask the buyer to stump up the added cost when you have quoted otherwise, but I am sure you have gathered that from the general comment/s here! I would advise you stump up your delivery fees when quoting for buyers when you list, Soolin said its not a good idea, but actually quoting appropiatly is a very good idea. Its not your fault postage costs what it does and the price appears on the stamp when its posted so its not really an issue a buyer can complain about. They only get ratty when you overquote whats written on the stamp by miles.
