Windows...transfer to another pc?

Now that my pc has died, has my legal copy of Windows gone too or can I put in on a different pc?
I have a notebook running Linux and would prefer XP instead, especially since I have a copy and legit activation key sat here now doing nothing.

As long as it was not a 'bundled'(one supplied at no extra cost at the time of purchase) version of Windows XP, you transfer it(the licence) to your new laptop.0

Ah. It was pre-installed on pc when it arrived. Stuffed then.Herman - MP for all!

Most likely, they usually bundle a "rescue" CD with the PC which accesses files on a hidden partition. So unless you put the hard drive in a new build and try to rescue it's gone. This would be probably of dubious legality as the licence died with your pc as it was an OEM installation
so yes probably stuffed.0 -

Depending on your honesty (and the fact you're using Linux on the lappy suggests you are), you could install that OEM version on the laptop however technically it's not legal as OEM versions die with the machine. But it would work. I would rather someone had an OEM transferred licence than a !!!!! version off bittorrent because at least it's been paid for somewhere down the line.0
