I have lost my mind - actually I have lost my D Drive!

Please help!

I seem to have lost my D and E Drives...no idea how?! I have had a read though the forum and determined that the Hardware Device is showing them both with exclamation marks. Following that I tried to download drivers but couldn't find the right ones. I thought I did but when I went to download one of them I received a message there was no drive to download a driver for?

I am using a 3 year old Fujitsu Siemens machine with Windows XP. I have all the Windows updates and service packs and regularly use Virus Checkers and Spyware etc..

It has only been recently that I have started saving music to the PC to put on my mp3 player. My instinct tells me I have done something wrong somewhere but I am not sure what.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated. I can't imagine both drives died at once and need replacing? I am hoping I have just turned something off that I shouldn't have!

And please speak slowly....I am of the age where I need to think out loud :O)

  • Hi
Reboot and go into Setup, check that your drives are showing in BIOS, and that they are enabled.

    Hope this helps

If the drives are enabled, go into device manager and select each drive in turn, right click and select properties, select the driver tab and click update driver, select automatic and click nxt. after the search it should bring up the default windows driver and then install. reboot and they should (fingers crossed) work.

Thanks for your help - I have tried the right click but get this Error Message

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

When I choose Troubleshoot I don't get anywhere at all :O(

It actually says The Wizard can not find a better option than the software you have.....but I don't have any!

  • Hi, are you by any chance using inCD or Roxio? If so, have a look at this:

  • Hi
Have you checked that they are enabled in the BIOS, if they are, reboot, go to device manager and unistall these drives, then reboot.
Hopefully XP, will load them up again and "find new hardware"

Thanks again to you both - I tried to reply last night but couldn't get back on the site.

I have gone into the BIOS and enabled a few things that looked disc oriented and did get one step further...this time the error message was the same but at least my system did recognise that the drivers were there.

And yes I was using Roxio Creator 8. I had a feeling it was slowing down my system and Roxio kept hanging so I uninstalled it (just before I lost my D and E Drives). I am guessing I hit something wrong on uninstall but can't reinstall as my Drive not working. Arrghhh.

Just off to read the recommended forum.

Follow the link in johnrp007's post - you need to backup both those drives and then edit the registry.

Just finished the Reg Edit and my drives are back! I am soo pleased. I love this site.

A big thanks again to John and Wonderful and Faz and Debt Free.

One last question - will this fix the problem with Roxio 8 i.e. is it safe to reinstall it and keep using it or shall I try something else altogether?

    Cheers
