  • Does anyone have a recipe for ginger wine?

My gran used to make this many years ago but, sadly, is no longer with us so I can't ask for the recipe.

It may be a Scottish thing as there doen't appear to be much on the internet. I found a 'Mrs Beaton' recipe but its not too clear.

I love the stuff so I would really like to attempt to make some.

    Hi Ayeshalush,

There's a link to a traditional Scottish recipe on this thread:

    Ginger Wine

I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the replies together.

  • Sorry I did do a search for ginger wine but it didn't come up with anything!!

The recipe on that thread is the Mrs Beaton one that is not very clear.

    Anyone with another?

    Thanks

  • Hi Ayeshalush
I have just made ginger wine (my grandpa used to make it every year for all the grandchildren). I used the ginger flavouring concentrate from the Co-op -
'The co-operative ginger yu-lade' cost was £1.09 for the bottle and you just use water and sugar to make it.

Thank you, will check out my local co-op tonight.
  • I've been looking for a ginger wine essence for the past couple of years because the one we used when I was little (Friar Tuck's) is no longer available. I even went to the co-op and the ladies in there have never heard of it (or yu-lade). Is this only available in Scottish Co-op's?
Think I was spoiled as far a Scottish ingredients in England was concerned when growing up, as I lived in Corby (family moved down in mid-60s when I was 4).
Does anyone know if yu-lade is available by mail order? Really fancy some ginger wine with my shortbread on New Year's Eve :)

you could just push the boat out and buy some??!! i love ginger wine.. cant leave it alone if there is a bottle open... mmmm i might have to buy some now, its so christmassy!
  • Why not just buy a bottle of Stone's Ginger Wine? It is easily available in the shops at this time of year and not too expensive, my dad has a bottle in his stocking every year.

Or Past Times have a non-alcholic version in their shops at the moment.

Or if you want a real kick try Ginger Tams from these guys

I tried some at Burghley and it was lush! Would be perfect for a hip flask when you are out in the cold!

If anyone does have a good receipe though i'd be interested in having a go.
