I have just installed itunes and I was wondering if it possible to run itunes from an external drive ? The reason being that my understanding is that you need to store all you music in itunes - hence lots of storage needed. I would prefer to leave the storage free on my laptop and have all the misic etc on my ecternal drive..is this possible ?
Any other handy tips would be appreciated...

Yup you can change where Itunes stores it's music files. it's somewhere in Preferences i think. (Not used iTunes for ages!!)

Yep - It's pretty simple. Just put all your music onto the external drive, then in iTunes go to 'File > Add Folder To Library', then just choose your external drive, click on 'OK'. iTunes will then scan the drive then add all your files in. As long as you don't change the drive letter of the drive, you can remove the drive, take it away with you etc, plug it back in and iTunes should still find the songs no problem.
Another thing I do personally, is when I download a song I just put it straight onto my iPod, then just play it off my iPod in iTunes. Saves having the same songs stored twice

I run my Itunes library from an external hard-drive and have no problems.
If you regularly detach your hard-drive, remember to always plug it in before you open itunes and close itunes before you remove it. If you don't do this, the preferences within itunes defaults back to C:\Documents and Settings as your intunes folder.

Assuming you're using Windows, the easiest way to do it is to go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced. Change the iTunes music folder to where you want it. Check the box that says "keep iTunes music folder organised". Click "OK".
Now, go to File > Library > Consolidate Library. click "Consolidate" and it will copy all of you music into your new iTunes folder. Then you can delete your old music folder (though make sure it all copied OK first!).0 -
How can you change the album name once you have got it into itunes because I seems to me some of the art work can't be found because of the name given to the album !
for examlpe Snow Patrol is coming up as Eyes Open [Delux limited edition cd/dvd] and I want to get ride of the [] part ! when I have changed it and added it back to the library it seems to put the album name back as it was !"The time is always right to do what is right"0 -
Select all the tracks you want to change and the press ctrl-i on Windows, or cmd-i on a Mac. Then change the album name.0
