I am buying a DVD writer since I don't have one and I want it in addition to my CD writer. I beleive I cannot buy an OEM one since it doesn't come with the necessary cables and screws. I am after either a LITEON SOHW 1693S or NEC ND-4550A in black. Can any recommend retailers selling the non-retail versions?

It might be worth opening up your PC to see what cables are present before you order your new drive.
I bought the OEM NEC-4550 DVD-RW drive from CCL Computers and found all the necessary cables and screws to connect a second drive were already inside my DELL 5150 PC! (The screws were located on the back of the blanking plate). Took about 5 minutes to fit and Windows auto-installs the required drivers.
BTW CCL provided an excellent service. Their standard delivery is Next Day, although you get an e-mail confirmation that says something like 5-7days!0 -
Aha - I too have a Dell. I will power down now and check!!!
EDIT: Just checked. Found the supporting rails and all cables are in place. Can't find the screws so will call them tomorrow. Thanks again. Will by driuve tomorrow too!0 -

take 2 screws from your existing CD or 1 from the CD and one from the HDD, 2 will be ok. slave it onto your HDD or CD. It'll save you about £20 instead of buying a boxed product0 -
I like the sound of that. Certainly given how snug they fit that should work. Interestingly the spare racks for additional hard drive did have screws so I can use them until I buy a HDD - which I am also planning on doing at some time!scheming_gypsy wrote:take 2 screws from your existing CD or 1 from the CD and one from the HDD, 2 will be ok. slave it onto your HDD or CD.
