Which DSLR should I choose?

Am torn between the Sony a350 and the Canon 450d. Both are about the same price and both have similar reviews - very good. Both also seem to offer everything I want to do with a DSLR.

My neighbour is a professional photographer and even she couldn't help me choose between them on paper.

I have handled the Canon, but so far have not handled the Sony. So I will be going to PC World in the near future to see it. I will not be buying from them needless to say, only using them as a convenience.

I would really appreciate some unbiased views on this - any advice out there?

Personally I would go for a Canon over a Sony. You'll find a larger range of lenses and accessories.

If both of them do what you want though, it really comes down to which one you feel more comfortable with using.

Hi, I have been looking aswell and read the reviews and I would opt for the 450D aswell.
  • Many thanks for the replies - it looks like the Canon then. I was edging that way myself as I have a p&s Canon and like the slr, it uses sd memory cards, so that would save a little bit to start with.
The Canon 450d can be had for less than 300 quid if you look around

Does that include the 18/55 lens as well? And if so, can you point me there please? I haven't found anywhere (reliable) less than £350.

One place not to go is eGears - I bought a Canon G9 from them and then found out they were not based in the UK and had no contact details.. they are cheap, but be aware of them

Thanks for that tip re eGears. I probably wouldn't have considered them anyway, as I won't normally buy from anyone online unless I have heard of them and know that they are reputable traders. I would rather pay a little bit more than risk buying from what may be a dodgy trader just because they are very cheap.

The Sony takes Minolta glass so thats not so much of an issue theres plenty around.
The sony also has the image stabilisor in the body whereas Canon have it as an extra in the lens,if you going to be using it in low light conditions it can make a difference. (dusk and dawn not flash photography at night.)

It may also be worth asking friends what they have, if they all have one make get that make so you can swap lens over..

Being a Canon lover I'd say Canon definitely.

  • I have a canon 20d, and have always found that more than enough for work and play, but model aside, I would definately go for the canon, and bear in mind canon lenses are very good quality, but you could pick up sigma or tamron on ebay at good prices.Hope this helps.Luci.
