Phonecall from bank, Genuine?

I have an ongoing savings complaint with Abbey ongoing by email. However this teatime Philip from "Abbey" rang on a withheld number to discuss something with me. He would not tell me what it was about without me answering a couple of security questions ( first line of my address etc.) Me being the untrusting soul that I am nowadays, refused to give him any details and told him if he had my address he could put it in writing! Is it just me or do you guys think I did the right thing?

I had the same with ShAbbey when I use to bank with them. I never gave them any info without assuring myself it was a genuine call and each time I would press them they usually gave in by telling me something non-specific, and non-compromising about the account/complaint.
There is no reason why Philip could not have done the same !0 -
You did the right thing - The Abbey should have emailed you with the fact that someone would be contacting you by phone .0

I received a call from my bank, the Co-op, asking to check a security issue on my account. I advised that I would prefer to call back to ensure that I knew I was talking to the bank. The operator was fully understanding and said that she would ensure details were on my account about the matter.
I then rang the bank myself, using the phone number written on my cheque book and bank statement and spoke to a helpful person on the other end who transferred me to the fraud department who were just ringing to confirm that a Norwegian web-transaction on my credit card was genuine - which it was.
This to me seems like the safest course of action - if the call is genuine they will understand, but always ring back on the number that you know belongs to the bank (check your statement, cheque book or other genuine communication) - do not ask the caller for the phone number!
Hope this helps.0
