Transferring data help

I have an external hard drive which I hold photos, home movies and my CD collection on and I've just been given a pack of 4.7GB DVD discs, my question is, can I transfer anything onto the DVD discs or do they just take a certain type of file?

I'm not very technical so any help will be gratefully received, just please put it in simple terms!!

DVD will hold any data type so long as the DVD discs are compatible with your DVD Drive you should be fine (also so long as you dont exceed 4.7Gb on them)
