Help needed setting up a wireless router

Hi,

I have been trying to install my philips wireless router (SNB5600) on my pc, but can't get it to work. I have virgin broadband connected to my pc via an ethernet cable. Everytime I try to set it up, I get an error message that I don't have a local internet connection...any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

The way I have set it up is - ethernet cable removed from pc and put into WAN on router and then another cable running into the ethernet on pc and the other end in LAN1.

I'd really appreciate any help as I've currently got a cable running across my living room floor which I'm desperate to get rid of. Cheers, Happi.

  • You've connected your Cable Modem with an ethernet cable to the WAN socket in the Router, yes?

Yes, the modem is connected via ethernet cable to WAN in router and then seperate cable from pc ethernet slot into LAN1 in router.
  • In your router settings, is it getting an IP address from the modem? You'll see this in WAN settings or something similar depending how Philips have designed it.

    If it's Virgin Cable, it'll start 82.xx.xx.xx

Sorry for not getting back to you earlier - only just been able to get back online as small children keep tripping over the broadband wire!

I've had a play around with the set-up, but haven't been able to check what you mentioned as I'm not sure where to look (apologies for being a complete novice). It seems that there is no internet connection as the @ sign on the philips box does not light up.

As my pc is quite old, do I need to do anything to it in order to go wireless or is that what the router will do?

    Sorry to be so vague/unsure!

You need a wireless adapter, either pci or usb, and much cheaper than a laptop.

absolutely agree^^^ just posted as much on your other thread :)

you need to find out how to log into your router, usually something like 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.0, etc., your router's handbook will tell you how (and also give you default username and password). Then, you will be able to see the router and line info...from there, we should be able to guide you through ensuring it's set up ok..
