Money wrongly put in my account

Hi all,
A sum of £255 was put into my account today. I called my bank (Lloyds) and was informed that the monies were from a solictors debt company that I have never heard of nor had any business with. However, of course I cannot be sure if somehow I am meant to receive this money (on my behalf) or more likely... not. Do I keep it? its a small amount really. Can they claim it back? and more importantly would they have needed my full-name and details to send me this money anyway and if so would that prove it was meant for me? Should I just try my luck or call the company itself? It would be pointless if I just have to give it back in two weeks for example.
But £255 before xmas! aaargh morals!!!

No you can't spend it - it's not your money and more than likely the company will chase it up when the person they were meant to be paying complains. Whether that's days, weeks or months is another matter. But £255 before xmas! aaargh morals!!!
Put it in a instant access savings account and enjoy getting some "free" interest before you have to give it back. But don't think of it as free money - you know who the money belongs to. If you saw someone drop the same amount in cash in the street would you just take it and think, "Well, it's almost Christmas..."?0 -
No fair enough, you're completely right... Should I ring this company or ask my bank to sort it out?0

Personally I would put it to one side, like in a savings account, and wait for someone to contact you. I wouldn't go running to them.0

Hi,
I have recently had the same happen to me, but for just under £2000.
I have contacted my bank for assistance, but they will not help me, they just said wait for a bit until things settle down.
Heres my link and the advice I was given.

If you know the name of the company who deposited it could you not contact them and ask if you were indeed supposed to receive this amount.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/2000
