House Insurance Question

Options
I live between 150 and 200 metres of a flood plain. We have never had any flood problems nor have there been any in the past as far as I am aware.

I used insuresupermarket to get a quote but when I clicked 'yes' to being within 200m of a river (which is what I guess a flood plain is really) they told me it would have to be 'referred'

Will this affect the insurance? If so, how?

It might affect the insurance - what it means basically is that they're not prepared to do a quote online, which can only be done for 'bogstandard' situations. Presumably they will start by looking at the website which shows which areas are at risk of flooding and if there doesn't seem to be a problem then you should be OK but might need to do a bit of arguing to demonstrate that not only have there not been floods in your area but also that you're not at risk because ... whatever reason you can think up.

I think it's the Environment Agency - yes it is, have just looked up my postcode, and I think anyone with any sense can see that although our house is one of the closest to the river, it's not 'at risk' because the blue bits don't extend over as far as the road, there is a large area of grass between us and the river, and our house is several metres higher than the river level. Down the end of the road, on the other hand ...

  • Different companies class different post code areas as "Flood Risk Areas" and may increase your premium or refuse to quote. If a loading has been applied you can usually dispute it and get it deleted if you have proof e.g. environmental report that your property is not in a flood area
