microsoft updates wipe out my personal settings

Why is it that every time there is an automatic update from Microsoft, all my settings in Word get messed around? On my File, Edit, etc toolbar "Format" has disappeared. How do I get that back? On Insert there is no facility for bullet points etc. I use Format Paragraph a lot and its a real pain not having a Format on the toolbar. The A which allows you to change the colour of fonts is on the customised toolbar but wont shift off black, so to change colour you have to go into Format Font and here we are back to Format again - or lack of it.
How can I keep my customised toolbars as "I" want them not how MS thinks I want them. That doesn't explain the complete disappearance of the Format on the toolbar though.
I seem to have seen something where you can keep the things as in Word 2000, would that apply to this and how would you do it?
This is really beginning to frustrate the living daylight out of me!! Every update mucks up something else.
Help please!! Not too technical language tho!
Thanks

XP Updates shouldnt mess your toolbars up however an incorrect setting on
https://www.ccleaner.com will revert toolbars to a non-user preference state.
Just right click the GUI (Graphical User Interface) in a grey area in Word
to get the settings back...."Toolbars".0 -
Thanks Intel, but sorry, (not very tecchie) what is the GUI - when I right click in a blank area of Word I get a small drop down menu with most of Format on it but not all. How do I get the 'Format' menu - and heading - back on my toolbar?0

Best thing to do is to stop using Microsoft updates
If you have a firewall, and antivirus software and use firefox/ thunderbird there really is no need0 -

That is absolute nonsense, XP Updates or any updates for that matter fix critical problems or just the subtle problems with add ons or inbuilt programs to say not to bother is to say dont worry about the PC its self or any security lapses and if it gets problems its your fault.
Get the updates at any given moment.... and DO BOTHER.
OP.. The GUI is this bit,, because no matter what you use its all similar, i.e, Word, Excel,Access, Outlook it all has the same interface.. the same GUI
You can change the Tools by right clicking the grey area of the GUI0 -
Thanks for your help. It isn't the whole Format toolbar I want, I use Tools / Customise to put up things I use a lot, but the drop down menu heading "Format" is missing, so I can't use the drop down menu for things I don't use so much. I now only have File, Edit, View, Insert, Tool, Tables, Windows and Help. I can look up the keyboard shortcuts but I don't understand why the Heading has simply disappeared. Any ideas?0

Open Word, Tools, Customize, Commands Tab, Scroll down to Built in Menus, Click Format and hold down now drag the word format upto and inbetween Insert and Tools on the Menu so it will look like it did.0

Once you get your toolbars back the way you want them, you really need to backup your personal settings or at least backup normal.dot (where these things are saved). Then, if they get messed up, you can simply restore from the backup.
I have to admit, I've not come across Windows Update messing up any settings. Perhaps your normal.dot is corrupt anyway?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Thanks very much Intel, it was really beginning to bug me. Just going out, but tried what you said and it worked straight away. I've never noticed Built In Menus before.
Debt-Free-Chick
Probably a silly question but how do I know if my normal.dot is corrupt?0
